Finished the first hand tested version of a hardware eb master recently.
So far everything works nicely and it looks quite performant, the interface
looks and feels a bit like a DMA controller kind of thing.

I had to use a couple of tricks in the interface in order to satisfy the wishbone standard,
so this core is not transparent.
A wrapper that could achieve this is in planning
